The best Xbox 360 games combine strong campaigns with very different ideas about player freedom. Some guide a squad through a dramatic sequence; others let an unexplored horizon pull you away from the main story. This shortlist puts those differences first. It also separates the value of a game’s campaign from the availability of its old digital store or online features, because those are separate questions when buying now.

Which games should you start with?
- Halo 3 — Open combat spaces, vehicles and a varied weapon sandbox make the campaign a strong choice for players who like improvising within a clear objective. It works especially well after becoming familiar with Halo’s earlier story and enemies. The story assumes previous games.
- Gears of War 2 — Cover, flanking threats and large dramatic moments give this campaign a forceful rhythm. Choose it for a directed action adventure where movement between protected positions matters, especially if local cooperative play is part of the plan. Violence and tone are deliberately heavy.
- Mass Effect 2 — Recruiting a crew makes character conversations and mission choices part of the same larger preparation. Pick it when you want a science-fiction RPG that focuses attention on companions rather than filling a vast map with activities. Character investment benefits from the first game.
- Red Dead Redemption — Travel, encounters and a changing landscape give this western its identity beyond the main missions. It suits players who enjoy open-world games as places to inhabit, while still wanting a substantial central story to follow. Travel and some mission patterns repeat.
- Lost Odyssey — Traditional party battles and a measured pace support a character-led fantasy journey. Choose it when command-based combat and time spent with a cast sound more appealing than immediate shooting or a large checklist of optional tasks. Slow pacing and older conventions require patience.

Understand what the store closure changes
Check ownership and compatibility separately. Microsoft ended new purchases through the Xbox 360 Store and Marketplace on July 29, 2024. Its announcement distinguishes that closure from playing or redownloading content already purchased, and from buying supported backward-compatible games through newer Xbox storefronts. It is not a blanket statement that every old game remains on sale.
For an original console, a disc and a previously owned download are different purchase routes. For Xbox One or Xbox Series, verify the exact title’s compatibility and the machine’s ability to read a disc. Online multiplayer additionally depends on the game’s publisher support; this list recommends the campaigns, not historical server availability.
Original Xbox games explain Halo’s earlier foundations, while Xbox One games cover the following generation. Halo games give the clearest story continuation, and JRPG games narrow the preference represented by Lost Odyssey. If the western is the attraction, choose by world and pacing instead of assuming every famous Xbox 360 release will suit the same evening.
