Halo: Combat Evolved is the most useful first campaign, even if Halo 3 is the tempting showcase for large battles. The opening game teaches the series’ relationship between shields, weapons and movement before later stories build on it. The Master Chief Collection puts several of these campaigns together, but the collection is a way to access games rather than a reason to skip their individual identities.

Four campaigns with different strengths
- Halo: Combat Evolved. Choose the first campaign for its gradual explanation of the world and its combat language. Switching weapons and using cover to restore shields are more important than hoarding one favorite gun. Anniversary presentation offers another way to see it, but the underlying campaign remains an older design.
- Halo 2. Halo 2 expands the setting beyond the mystery of the first ring. Its value is partly narrative, so it works better after Combat Evolved than as an isolated action purchase. Expect the story to continue into Halo 3 rather than neatly conclude within this campaign.
- Halo 3. This is the natural choice when you already understand the setup and want flexible encounters involving infantry, vehicles and changing terrain. Its campaign rewards improvisation rather than one perfect route. Starting here is possible, but you give up much of the context behind the returning characters.
- Halo 3: ODST. ODST changes the viewpoint from the Master Chief to orbital drop soldiers. Its city sections create a different mood from the main trilogy’s forward drive. Choose it for a change of pace rather than expecting another uninterrupted sequence of huge victories by an armored super-soldier.
Compare the choices
| Game | Main appeal | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Halo: Combat Evolved | The clearest series introduction | Older layouts can feel repetitive |
| Halo 2 | A broader story and perspective | Ends before its central conflict resolves |
| Halo 3 | Vehicle battles and combat sandboxes | Stronger with story context |
| Halo 3: ODST | A quieter, more vulnerable atmosphere | Different pacing from the main trilogy |

Use the collection deliberately
The Master Chief Collection includes Combat Evolved Anniversary, Halo 2 Anniversary, Halo 3, ODST, Reach and Halo 4. Check package and installation details on your platform before assuming every campaign component is installed. For a newcomer, release order is a sensible route because it preserves the sequence in which the series introduced its ideas and revelations.
Cooperative games can make difficult encounters more approachable, but local and online options are not interchangeable across PC and console. Verify your co-op setup before arranging an evening together. This selection concerns campaigns, not a claim about current matchmaking populations. If multiplayer games are the priority, investigate the exact modes and platform support separately rather than choosing a historical favorite on reputation alone.
