Resident Evil 2 is our starting recommendation for someone who wants horror with practical problems to solve: ammunition, routes and limited inventory space. Alien: Isolation is the choice for sustained pursuit, while SOMA suits players more interested in disturbing ideas. Horror games differ in how they make you feel powerless. Knowing whether you enjoy fighting back, hiding or investigating is more useful than accepting a universal claim about which game is the scariest.

Four distinct ways to feel threatened

  1. Resident Evil 2 (2019). The remake gives exploration a tactical edge: every trip through a familiar corridor consumes time and potentially supplies. Choose it when having a weapon makes decisions more interesting, not when you want uninterrupted shooting. Managing what to carry is as important as deciding what to fire at.
  2. Alien: Isolation. Isolation is the match for someone who wants to listen, watch and move cautiously through a hostile station. The threat changes how an ordinary room feels. It is a less comfortable choice if being hunted prevents you from enjoying environmental exploration, even when the setting itself appeals.
  3. SOMA. SOMA’s questions about identity can linger longer than its immediate threats. Its Safe Mode changes creature behavior so you cannot die from those encounters, providing another way to approach the story. That does not remove the atmosphere or difficult subject matter, so it should not be mistaken for a cheerful exploration mode.
  4. Amnesia: The Bunker. The Bunker places you in a confined First World War setting where keeping the lights on becomes part of survival. Tools create possibilities without making you secure. Choose it if you enjoy acting under pressure and testing a plan, rather than expecting a rigid sequence of safely separated scares.

Find a tolerable level of pressure

There is no objective fear ranking that predicts your reaction. Pursuit, limited resources and unsettling ideas affect people differently. Choose pressure you can enjoy: a game can be effective horror and still be the wrong evening for you. Review content descriptions and accessibility settings without reading plot summaries that reveal the most interesting discoveries.

Zombie games often overlap with survival horror, but the presence of a monster does not explain how the game plays. Resident Evil games offer a useful branch for players drawn to inventory decisions and combat; story games are another direction for those mainly interested in narrative unease. Check the exact edition and platform settings before buying, particularly when a less punishing mode is the reason you are considering a title.
