The best Call of Duty for a memorable campaign is not automatically the best purchase for online matches. Older games can remain compelling solo while their competitive communities change. Our starting recommendation is Modern Warfare (2019) for a self-contained reboot campaign; Black Ops Cold War is the alternative for espionage and Zombies. These picks focus on recognizable, established experiences rather than assuming the newest release serves every player.

Four useful starting points
- Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Start here if you want to understand the series’ shift into modern military fiction. Its mission-led campaign moves between perspectives without requiring a season of multiplayer progress. Decide whether you want the original release or Modern Warfare Remastered; they are separate products.
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019). This is the clearer choice if dated presentation would distract you from the older game. The reboot establishes its own version of familiar characters and alternates explosive action with slower operations. Its title alone is not enough to identify it in a store search.
- Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. Cold War offers a spy-fiction campaign alongside the recurring cooperative Zombies format. Choose it if you want a break from a strictly military campaign tone. Zombies is about repeated survival and progression, so enjoying the story does not guarantee you will enjoy its other major attraction.
- Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered. The important word is Campaign. This edition restores the 2009 story rather than reproducing every component of the original game. It suits someone who wants cinematic single-player shooting, but it is the wrong edition for friends planning to replay the original cooperative missions.
Compare the choices
| Game | Main appeal | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare | Classic campaign pacing | Older presentation and systems |
| Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019) | Modern reboot campaign | Not a remake of Call of Duty 4 |
| Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War | Espionage and Zombies | Different modes need different expectations |
| Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered | Campaign-only blockbuster missions | No original multiplayer or Spec Ops |

Check what is included
Before choosing, write down whether you want a campaign, cooperative games or competitive matches. Then check the actual edition against that purpose. Campaign-only means campaign-only: remastered branding is not a promise that multiplayer maps or cooperative modes have been carried across. Content warnings are also worth reviewing because several campaigns depict distressing violence.
For online play, verify the current platform requirements, installation options and service status separately. This guide does not promise queue times, player counts or a particular matchmaking experience. If your interest is a finite story with no reliance on an active community, the established campaigns above are the more predictable way to choose among first-person shooters.
